About Me

Hello, I am Nicole King!  I'm a Brisbane Counsellor.

I bring counselling skills and a wealth of life experience to my counselling sessions.

I am passionate about helping people navigate change and loss and can help anyone who feels stuck...stuck in their life, their situation, in their pain and sorrow, or in their stress. It can be difficult to move forward in that space, so I offer a compassionate ear and tools to support you. Moving women from feeling stuck and sometimes broken to honouring all the parts of themselves and their journey, helping them own their story, honouring their loss, and rebuilding a life worth living.

Previous life

My journey to become a Counsellor followed two decades in the corporate and not-for-profit worlds, where I worked in Marketing and Internal Communications. After taking a pause in my career when I had children, and contemplating a return to the workforce, I no longer felt aligned with Marketing and felt compelled to change direction. I had always had a love of  philosophy and psychology and a desire to help others. One of my roles in a not-for-profit organisation years earlier had sown the seed when I saw the impact  counsellors were having on people who were marginalised in our society. Witnessing people's journey as they made their way through the toughest of times - out of homelessness, addiction, or abusive relationships, stirred something in me. It made me reflect on the saying "we are all just one event or bad decision away from being homeless".

Why Counselling (not psychology)

And so I embarked on studies to become a qualified Counsellor. I opted for counselling over psychology, as I was drawn to its more holistic, person-centred approach.  Less diagnosis and assessment, more about walking alongside the client, truly listening, and working collaboratively to work on their goals. I found that I loved one-on-one discussions, meaningful conversations, and guiding individuals in self-discovery.

In recent years, I worked as a Family Relationship Advisor and Counsellor at Relationships Australia Queensland, following roles as a Counsellor and Crisis Supporter at Griefline and Lifeline. Additionally, I provided support to families (adults and children) dealing with grief and end-of-life challenges at Hilda's House and Ipswich Hospice.

Who I work with now and how I work

Today, I work with a variety of clients, including women experiencing change and loss. This includes the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, health or job loss, or a relocation.

My counselling philosophy is grounded in Rogerian person-centered therapy, with a strengths-based approach,  I tailor the therapy based on a client's presentation and goals, but may include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution Focussed Therapy, Motivational Interviewing. I also incorporate Emotional Freedom Technique and may use Bach Flower Essences for additional support.  I draw from a variety of tools and modalities to support clients on their journey of self-discovery, helping them feel safe, heard, uncovering their strengths to live a life with balance, joy and meaning.

Other support I offer

I have found that self-care rituals are so helpful for my own and my client's wellbeing.  I've integrated some of these proven methods and exercises into Care Packs, so that others can benefit from self-care routines to reduce stress and avoid burnout.

I am also a trained Bach Flower Essence Practitioner. I can utilise Bach Flower Essences in sessions and include them in the Care Packs and in my online store.
