About Me

Hello, I’m Nicole King, a Counsellor based in Brisbane.

I became a qualified Counsellor in 2020 after completing my counselling studies at ACAP University and a placement at Hilda's House in Grief Counselling and Palliative Care Counselling. After completing my studies, I volunteered as a Crisis Support Worker for Lifeline and was a Volunteer Counsellor with Grielfine before starting work with Relationships Australia as a Family Relationship Advisor and Gambling Helpline Counsellor. I set up my private practice in 2024 and also currently work part time at a non-profit organisation as a Counsellor in the Family and Relationships Services area.

The Path to Counselling
My journey to becoming a Counsellor began after more than two decades of experience doing various roles from legal secretary, waitressing, temping to Marketing and Internal Communications - working across Brisbane, London, and Sydney. While I loved these roles and living in different cities, after having children, I returned to Brisbane to be closer to family and took a pause in my career to raise my children. During this time I did some natural health studies but my experience in the non-profit sector had opened my eyes to the power of counselling as I witnessed individuals overcoming homelessness, addiction, and abuse. I realised my passion was in helping others through counselling and enrolled in Post Graduate Studies at ACAP University which set me on a new path to a more fulfilling career aligned with my values.

Why Counselling?
I chose counselling over psychology because of its holistic, person-centered approach. Psychology can at times focus on the individual and their diagnosis. Truly listening, understanding a client's world, the context, their relationships, their upbringing can provide many answers as to why a person is struggling.  I’m drawn to the process of truly listening to my clients and walking alongside them on their journey of self-discovery and growth.

How I Work
My counselling approach is grounded in person-centered therapy, with a strengths-based focus. I tailor the methods to each client’s needs, drawing from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness, Emotionally Focussed Therapy and also use somatic based techniques such as Emotional Freedom Technique. I also at times provide clients with a custom Bach Flower Essence Blend to support them on their journey.

What I love doing

I love doing the work I do, but I also love the time I spend with my family - my husband and two children  - and my beautiful Labradoodle (seen in the picture on this page). Spending time in nature, cycling along the river, bush walking and enjoying the simple things - sunshine and the beach nearby, reading a good book.
